The Gift of Fire

Elsewhere

My Work:

For the Gift of Fire campaign, I was the primary Level Designer on the 3rd mission (Boarding), and was responsible for creating the interior of the Juggernaut ship the majority of the mission takes place in. My work included blocking out all spaces inside the ship using splines and static meshes, designing gameplay lanes and encounters, placing spawn points, and designing the mechanics of the final encounter of the mission. I was responsible for manipulating the collision and Navmesh to allow the AI to smoothly path on the ceilings and walls. I also contributed heavily to the overall visual design of the interior, as the use of splines required using real art assets.

I also contributed to level and encounter design for the 2nd mission (Advance), designing roughly 1/3 of the combat areas.

Being selected to create the interior of such an iconic ship from sci-fi history (especially since there’s only one piece of reference for the interior) was both exciting and terrifying. With the help of concept and art direction, we developed a ruleset that included each room hinting at a mysterious purpose, hopefully enticing players to ponder what the Engineers once did on this ship.

I designed the spaces to support the reveal of an entirely new enemy group, the Pathogen. These enemies had very specific and very different needs from each other, with the Husk serving as a zombie-type enemy, and the Popper enemy swarming players in huge numbers. To accommodate both styles, I designed wide floor lanes for Husks to noticeably charge players, and spacious walls and ceilings for Poppers to allow swarms near the edge of players’ FoV, adding to the overwhelming feeling we were always going for.

I also supported the second mission in the campaign, contributing to level and encounter design inside the biomechanical facility discovered beneath the catacombs in the Engineer ruins on planet LV-895. These spaces are more open and vaulted than the Juggernaut interior and use a slightly different architectural style.
